Originating in 1929, the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program is a nationwide, cooperative statistical effort of nearly 18,000 federal, state, local, campus, and tribal law enforcement agencies voluntarily reporting data on crimes brought to their attention. The FBI UCR Program's primary objective is to generate reliable information for use in law enforcement administration, operation, and management; over the years, however, the data have become one of the country’s leading social indicators. The program has been the starting place for law enforcement executives, students of criminal justice, researchers, members of the media, and the public at large seeking information on crime in the nation.
In 2001, Missouri instituted UCR reporting on a statewide basis. Every law enforcement agency in the State has since been required to report crime data monthly to the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP). While MSHP statutorily collects, maintains, and analyzes Missouri UCR data and forwards appropriate information to the FBI for use in national crime statistics, the CJIS Division is required to make such data available to both law enforcement and the public at large.
